Amber N. Mitchell

Curator of Black History, The Henry Ford

Amber N. Mitchell is a public historian and educator currently serving as the founding Curator of Black History at The Henry Ford. Amber’s work is rooted in her upbringing in Detroit, where the stories of people of African descent and their impact on the United States have always been central. As a community-rooted public historian, Amber strives to empower communities of color to tell our own stories in cultural institutions and beyond, while transforming nonprofit structures into accessible reflections of our communities. She serves her professional and local communities as a board member of the Slave Dwelling Project, The Heidelberg Project, and Wayne State University’s Masters in Public History Program. Before joining The Henry Ford, Amber held positions at Whitney Plantation, the National WWII Museum, the American Association for State and Local History, among other spaces in Detroit and the Midwest. She holds a master’s degree in History from Indiana University and a bachelor’s in History from Wayne State University.
