Home Heating Credit Expires Sept. 30 for Thousands in S.E. Michiga

heating.jpg.jpgAn estimated 30,000 households in southeast Michigan may still be eligible to file for the 2014 Home Heating Credit, which helps low-income families with the cost of heating their homes.

Many eligible low-income households do not know about the credit or fail to take advantage of it. Eligibility for this Michigan credit is based on several variables including  income, number of exemptions, and heating costs. The current credit covers the period from  Nov. 1, 2013 through Oct. 31, 2014 and the deadline to apply is September 30.

Accounting Aid Society (AAS), a nonprofit agency with more than 35 years of tax experience, offers free help in applying for the Home Heating Credit. AAS also offers free tax filing help for those who missed the regular income tax filing deadline in April, or who have tax returns to file from previous years. Eligibility guidlines for free tax help are households with incomes up to $53,000, and individuals with income up to $35,000.
