DETROIT — Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded in 1908 at Howard University in Washington D.C.
In 1922, seven of its members decided to begin a Detroit chapter, the first in Michigan.
“We are chapter of 689 strong Black women and we are multi-generational,” said Carlyn J. Robinson, President, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated – Alpha Rho Omega Chapter.
“They were dealing with prejudice – the hard time of the era but, they said like-minded women should come together and support one another and strive for education and continue to further that movement.”
Robinson is playing her part in further the movement. She is leading the chapter as it focuses raising funds for scholarships, partnering with community organizations to increase voter registration, and so much more.
“AKATeens has been one of our organizations which is for young high school aged women. We teach them leadership skills, life skills, and they are able to come together on conflict resolution, etc.”
The AKA Detroit chapter is planning for the “BLOCK Party of the Century”. On Sunday, September 11th, it’s celebrating 100 years of service and there is a lot to be expected.
“We will have a DJ and entertainment, including step and stroll performances by local members of the Black Greek Lettered Organizations, also known as the Divine 9,” said Ada Smith, Ada Smith, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® – Alpha Rho Omega Chapter Centennial Block Party Chairperson.
” There will also be yoga, hustle instruction, dance contests, card games, raffles, spoken word, a 9-11 tribute 360 photo booth, and more. A children’s activity area will be available with the make-and-take crafts, games, contests, face
painting, balloon art, free book distribution, and hands-on STEM activities by Code 313.”
Food Trucks will include Eman’s Kitchen, Heavenly Chicken and Waffles, The Lobster Food Truck, and an Ice Cream Truck. The Hispanic DCDC will host a vendor area on their lot, including local multicultural vendors and community partners.
The centennial event celebration will run from12pm – 6pm, on Howard St., between Trumbull and Rosa Parks Blvd. will be action-packed.
Robinson couldn’t be prouder of this celebratory moment in the chapter’s history and to lead such an organization.
“I am truly humbled to stand on the shoulders of those that came before me …100 years of walking that same path as our ancestors and thinking about ways we can continue to be of service to mankind.”
