Comerica Bank’s commitment to diversity has been recognized by Hispanic Business magazine, which ranked Comerica No. 5 in its annual “Top 60 Diversity Elite Scorecard.”

As published in the September issue of Hispanic Business magazine, consideration for the 2009 “Diversity Elite” involved analysis of more than 32 variables that measure a company’s commitment to Hispanic hiring, promotion, marketing, philanthropy and supplier diversity. Comerica received its highest marks from the publication in the categories of board, leadership and personnel; and supplier diversity.

“At Comerica it’s been our belief that a strong commitment to diversity must be driven from the top down,” said Linda Forte, Comerica Bank senior vice president of Business Affairs and chief diversity officer.  “Therefore it is particularly gratifying to be recognized for having representation and a commitment to Hispanic and other minority employees at the highest levels of the organization, including our board.”

“In addition, we understand the challenges being faced by all suppliers in today’s economic environment, so it also means a great deal that we received a high grade for supplier diversity.”

The term “Hispanic,” as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Spanish-speaking people in the United States of any race. On the 2000 Census form, people of Spanish/Hispanic/Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or “other Spanish/Hispanic/Latino.” More than 35 million people identified themselves as “Hispanic” or “Latino” on the 2000 Census.

Comerica’s inclusion on the “Diversity Elite Scorecard” follows a recent announcement from LATINA Style magazine, which ranked Comerica 23rd on its LATINA Style 50 Report.  LATINA Style annually identifies American corporations that are providing the best career opportunities for Latinas.

“Maintaining and improving on our diversity commitment requires meeting the expectations of all the communities we serve,” said Monica Martinez, vice president of National Hispanic Business Affairs for Comerica Bank.  “We are proud of our recent honors and look forward to maintaining the high standard that has been set.”
