With the neighboring casino in Windsor now being a smoke-free environment, there has been resistance for the Detroit casinos following suit in a present economic climate where they can compete as being accommodating to their smoking patrons.
“Whatever your business is,” added Ellison, “if you decide to let people smoke on the premises, they will die a lot faster and then they won’t be around long to patronize your business. Money is being lost by allowing the smoking.”
This past June, Ellison and AfroFlow performed for ACS supporters in a rally at the State Capitol in Lansing to urge lawmakers to make the anti-smoking legislation and better health care a top priority.
“It was a great day and a great performance,” said Ellison. “Unfortunately, a lot of the state representatives and legislators didn’t find it important enough to come and answer to their constituents. We had thousands of people out there. If anti-smoking is not considered important for the people, nobody will push for it.”
