Black History Month is here, and Detroit is making sure the celebration commences. The Detroit Civil Rights, Inclusion, and Opportunity Department have several BHM events in place for the community. These events cater to black entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and community involvement. Featured speakers include James Chapman, Founder & CEO at Plain Sight and Entrepreneur in Residence at Quicken Loans Community Fund, Monica Wheat of Venture Catalysts, and Detroit Start-up Week, and Serial Entrepreneurs Rick and Yolanda Williams.
The following events will occur on:
February 18: Black History Month Black Social at Ivy’s Kitchen. The event will take place from 7 PM to 10 PM. This event is sponsored by Dennis Archer, Jr. and State Senator Marshall Bullock.
February 22: Detroit Black Business Crawl, which is an all-day event.
February 26: Black History Month Social Impact Social at Great Lakes Sports Bar. The event will be held from 6 PM to 9 PM.
February 28: Black History Month Black Business Expo. This event will be held from 11 AM to 2 PM.
Charity Dean, Director of CRIO, hopes these events will stimulate conversation in the Greater Detroit community. “Detroit has always been the home of Black leaders in our country,” Dean said. “Black Leaders are born in Detroit, raised in Detroit, and develop the grit and innovation to make significant change throughout the world. This holds true for Civil Rights Leaders, Artists, and Entrepreneurs. We are really excited to celebrate the accomplishments of our ancestors and what it means to be unapologetically Black in Detroit. The Civil Rights, Inclusion, and Opportunity Department is proud to execute these events, as The City of Detroit continues to act on our commitment to ensure that Detroit is the place where Black people thrive!”
