In December of 2019, marijuana sales topped $1.6 million in its first week, then $3.6 million at the end of the second week. Lines of people could be seen at specific locations throughout Michigan, excited to receive the chance to purchase legal marijuana finally. Legal marijuana sales began in November of 2019 and since then, 27 locations in Michigan have received licenses to sell marijuana. The 27 areas include:

Absent from both lists is Detroit, who hasn’t approved a formal opt-out ordinance yet for the sale of marijuana. Detroit Councilman James Tate is working diligently to rectify this issue before the January 31 deadline. “The state says whenever a municipality decides to send the opt-out … the city is allowed to do so, and it will receive it,” Tate said on November 5. “So, though we are on … November 5, we did begin our process before November 1, and that was recognized by the state.”
Joe White, director of Detroit NORML believes there are other measures at stake with marijuana laws in Detroit. “How can we start to raise the real issue?” asks Joe White. “The topic is economic inclusion. We’re not a part of this multibillion-dollar business that’s being talked about in the papers.”
With so many cities progressing with the rate of licensing in Michigan, one can only hope Detroit will follow suit as well.
