HBCUs See Increase in Enrollment for Fall Academic Year

HBCU schools are seeing a major increase in student enrollment number for this fall semester, Black Enterprise Magazine reported.
The “enrollment boom” came on the heels of the last summer’s “Black Lives Matter movement, record donations, and Black student awareness,” according to the article.

Bowie State University will more than likely see an 8% increase in enrollment; Howard University (HU) (which had a 15% increase during the pandemic) plans to see an even greater increase this year, according to the article.

“Our enrollment continues to rise and increase year over year,” Bowie State University President Aminta Breaux told NBC News. “We’re seeing more students from the West Coast, the Midwest, from the southern states.”

HBCU officials reported in the article that the political climate and demands for racial justice are also key players in the student enrollment increase based on student majors.

“We are attracting students who have a significant interest in social justice and an interest in addressing what they see as the ills of society,” Chief Academic Officer Anthony Wutoh added in the article.
