Harris Will Be Sworn In By Justice Sotomayor, Holding Thurgood Marshall’s Bible, For Inauguration

History was already made when Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was elected to become second in command to President-elect Joe Biden.

History was again made on Wednesday, Jan. 20 when Harris was sworn into office by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, Essence Magazine reported. Harris, the first Black, South Asian and female vice president will take her oath of office from Sotomayor, who is the first Latina Justice, the magazine reported. Harris, a Howard University alum, will become the 49th vice president of the United States of America.

The magazine reported that according to a source, Harris chose Sotomayor for this special occasion because she admires her. Harris and Sotomayor both worked as prosecutors and Sotomayor once referred to Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Supreme Court Justice as one of her greatest heroes, similarly how others have described the vice president-elect.

On July 2, 2020, Harris posted a video on Twitter where she said that

Marshall is her “childhood hero and inspiration.” She also posted that, “our nation is stronger because of his powerful voice for civil rights and social justice.” She goes to also credit Marshall, a fellow graduate of Howard University, as the reason she attended the historical Black college.

The magazine reported that during Harris’ swearing-in ceremony, she plans to use two Bibles. One Bible belonged to Marshall and the other belonged to Mrs. Regina Shelton, who acted as a second mother to Harris and her sister Maya. During her early years, Harris and her sister visited Shelton’s home every day and became close to her daughter and her foster children, according to the article. This will be the third time Harris uses Shelton’s Bible. As the first two times were when Harris was sworn in as California Attorney General and into the United States Senate in 2017.

“Our nation is stronger because of his powerful voice for Civil Rights and social justice,” the Vice President-elect said of Marshall.
