Grosse Pointers to form new NAACP branch

GROSSE POINTEOn Wednesday evening, Sept. 23, 2015 (tonight), a large and diverse crowd is expected to celebrate and welcome the creation of the first ever NAACP branch to be created in Grosse Pointe. The event, scheduled from 7-8:30 pm, will take place at Rockefellers Oyster Bar and Grill, 15402 Mack Avenue, in Grosse Pointe.

From the press release:

For several years now, the number of people of color has been growing in the five Grosse Pointes and Harper Woods. Meanwhile, there have been a few growing pains as issues of race, class and diversity began to touch on important aspects of daily life ranging from public education to policing. The effort to form a NAACP Branch has grown out of a belief by the organizers that the future of Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods will be brighter if all of the people of goodwill can come together and work towards greater racial harmony, a deeper commitment to social justice, inclusion and diversity. Tonight’s event is the first gathering of its kind as blacks, whites, Hispanics, Arabs and Asians come together across the lines of race, gender and economic status to come together to form a new NAACP branch. The event promises to be a seminal moment in the region’s history of race relations as Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods takes an important step to shedding its past as a place less welcoming to people of color and embracing a future where everyone is welcome regardless of race, religion, gender and socio-economic status.”
