Grammy Winner Samara Joy Brings Extra Joy to Detroit Jazz Festival Line-up

Grammy Award winning vocalist Samara Joy will join Detroiters and National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) Jazz Masters honorees violinist Regina Carter, drummer Louis Hayes, and alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett on the 2023 line-up of the Detroit Jazz Festival. This year’s festival will take place September 1st through the 4th. 

“We are extremely excited to feature three newly awarded NEA Jazz Masters — Regina Carter, Louis Hayes and Kenny Garrett, who are also Detroit jazz icons — on the stages of the festival this year,”  Chris Collins, Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation president and artistic director, told the Detroit Free Press. “Their presence, along with the unique energy and vision of Karriem Riggins, who is also from Detroit, will highlight an incredible showcase of diverse talent and revolutionary jazz from around the world.” 

The late J Dilla, whose dreamy drum loops served as a sonic backdrop for A Tribe Called Quest, Common, and other artists, will be honored at the festival.  

Other local artists and events in the line-up: “The Detroit Piano Legacy Continues…”, which is a montage of Detroit pianists and Detroit Jazz Festival Global Connect International All-Stars Hurricane Trio featuring Chris Collins.
