Governor Whitmer Proclaims NFL Draft Week in Michigan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has officially declared April 22-28 as NFL Draft week in Michigan, marking a significant occasion as Detroit gears up to host the prestigious 2024 NFL Draft. The event will be held at the notable Campus Martius Park and Hart Plaza, where NFL teams will gather to choose their future stars.

Governor Whitmer expressed her enthusiasm about the upcoming draft, noting, “Detroit is fired up to host the NFL Draft. Our state is home to some of the best stories in football, and the draft will bring fans from across the country to Michigan. It’s also an opportunity to uplift the city, support local businesses and workers, and keep telling our story. Let’s seize this opportunity to show everyone what Michigan is all about and make this NFL Draft week unforgettable for both residents and visitors.”

Adding to the excitement, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted the draft’s potential impact on the city, stating, “The NFL Draft is going to do more for our city in terms of economic activity and its national image than any single event in Detroit’s history. This week, hundreds of thousands of visitors will be staying at our hotels, shopping at our stores, and dining at restaurants across the city. We’ve been working behind the scenes for more than a year and now is the time for our city to shine.”

Claude Molinari, President and CEO of Visit Detroit, also emphasized the significance of the event, saying, “The NFL Draft is going to be the largest and most inclusive sporting event in Michigan’s history. By highlighting Detroit’s beauty and vitality, hundreds of thousands of visitors and tens of millions of TV viewers around the world will see what we already know. Detroit and Michigan are great places to live, work, invest, and visit.”

The NFL Draft is a major event in the sporting calendar and this year, it will unfold over three days from April 25 to 27. Set against the backdrop of Detroit’s dynamic cityscape, this year’s draft is not only a platform for emerging football stars but also a showcase for the city itself. With expectations of attracting 300,000 visitors, the event is poised to generate significant economic benefits for the city.

“Michiganders know that Detroit is one of the world’s greatest cities, and we relish the
opportunity to let others in on what makes the Motor City so special,” Whitmer said in support of the NFL Draft back in 2021. “The current momentum, energy and commitment there has made it a city ripe with possibility and burgeoning with unprecedented support. This is a chance for the NFL to have Detroit as a backdrop to celebrate the future of the League and its players. Detroit is just that: the future – of automation, design and innovation.”

Governor Whitmer’s support for Detroit’s bid to host the 2024 NFL Draft began as early as March 2021. A year later, thanks to relentless efforts and advocacy by many Michiganders, Detroit successfully secured the bid. This week-long celebration promises to highlight Michigan’s spirit and hospitality, creating lasting memories for both residents and visitors alike.
