Governor Whitmer in Detroit to Sign New $1B Economic Development Bill

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is in Detroit today for the signing of economic development legislation into law, which earmarks roughly $1.5 billion in funds to increase business investment around Michigan, FOX 2 Detroit reported.

An up-and-coming General Motors battery plant is one of many slated projects that the state wants to pursue under the new economic funding plan, according to the article. The plant lost out beforehand to the states of Kentucky and Tennessee when Ford announced where its latest manufacturing plants would be developed, the article added.

The legislation (garnering bipartisan support) encompasses at least four “serious projects,” per the article, which would include two auto industry investments, a lawmaker noted recently. Both the state House and Senate approved the bills designed to bolster the local economy, which would positively impact the state.

Whitmer will be joined today by Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, both Democrats and Republicans Jason Wentworth and Mike Shirkey.

“Thanks to the effective collaboration of legislative leadership in both parties, our state will be competitive for every dollar and every job for years to come. I am confident that, together, we can continue to create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs and uplift our communities by setting up this critical economic development fund,” she said in a statement last week.
