Governor Whitmer Implores Patience During Stay Home Order

Governor Whitmer requested Michiganders continue to adhere to her Stay Home Stay Safe Order Wednesday. This comes amid rising spring temperatures and another expected State Capitol protest looming this week which the governor says could potentially be threatening.

“It is when you were touching one another,” said Whitmer. “We saw a lot of that at these protests at the Capitol, and that’s how COVID-19 spreads. It’s incredibly contagious, and there are a lot of people getting COVID-19 who are asymptomatic, and so they’re conducting life and so they’re healthy because they honestly think they’re healthy, but they’re carrying it and spreading it.”

Since the order has taken effect, Michigan has dropped from third in the nation of reported COVID-19 cases to 11th. Deaths and hospitalizations are down significantly within the past month, meanwhile testing capacities have amplified.

Yet the economic impact has been arguably equally devastating. In an effort to start that recovery process the governor announced state employees will take two temporary layoff days per pay period (every two weeks) until July. It is estimated this will save the state $80 million.

The Michigan Chronicle previously reported Whitmer and her executive staff underwent a recent pay cut to help address budget concerns.
