Good Cakes and Bakes to appear on ‘Today’ show

Good Cakes and Bakes pastry chef April Anderson will be featured on NBC’s “Today” show Thursday morning as part of its Mother’s Day segment.

Anderson and her mother, Shirley Madison, are scheduled to appear on a cooking segment at 8 a.m. The mother and daughter tandem will be demonstrating a Lemon Velvet Cake, one of the bakery’s signature layer cakes. The cake is available for order and is $50.

Anderson opened her organic bakery Good Cakes and Bakes along the Avenue of Fashion on Livernois along with her wife Michelle in 2013, and has created a name for herself nationally. She has baked for Oprah Winfrey and has appeared on a panel about Detroit with President Bill Clinton during his CGI America event in April 2015. She was also named as one of the “15 Change-makers Chefs to Watch” according to the James Beard Foundation and attended the annual James Beard Foundation boot camp (2018).

An alumna of Chadsey High School, Anderson obtained her Bachelor of Science from Spelman College and her Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. She began baking at the age of nine, making treats for her family on a regular basis.

Good Cakes and Bakes opened off the Avenue of Fashion strip six years ago. The pastry shop specializes in desserts made primarily with organic and locally grown ingredients including the house specialty gooey butter cake.
