Cupcakes and Community, two beautiful words to describe the beautiful Good Cakes and Bakes bakery located in Detroit. In 2013, April and Michelle Anderson opened the doors to what is now one of Detroit’s most infamous “sweet spots.” City.Life.Style. received an exclusive invite to view the newly renovated 2,323 sq. foot space that includes a state-of-the-art kitchen, co-working space, sample some goodies, and catch up with the head baker in charge, co-owner April Anderson, who shared some important tidbits for up and coming Detroit Entrepreneurs.
“Do it because you love it and not for the money, because in the beginning there is no money,” Anderson said comically. The emphasis on passion versus profit was evident as she described that she opened Good Cakes and Bakes Bakery 62 days after quitting her full-time job as an accountant despite some discouragement. She admits that she always wanted to bake but did not believe it could be a career with a high school son. However, in 2010 she went back to school for her degree in pastry arts.
In 2020, April and Good Cakes and bakes have seen unprecedented success, even being featured on the Today Show. She attributes her success to starting a business that genuinely serves her Community. On being essential during the pandemic, April states, ”if you can’t provide something that caters to your community, you will not survive.” This is an apparent need met in the bakery’s new re-design; it is aesthetically designed to provide a warm co-working space within the bakery.
During our visit to Good Cakes and Bakes, we tried a tasty fall-favorite, “Spiced Apple Cider Cake,” a perfect snack to pair with coffee or your preferred warm beverage. April’sApril’s favorite baked goods include her gourmet German Chocolate cake with rich-dark chocolate instead of the traditional unsweetened chocolate. Additionally, she suggests her famous Red Velvet lemon cake, which was highlighted on her Today Show appearance and shipped to customers nationwide. Other fan favorites are their Banana Pudding, and finally, the delicious red-velvet cupcakes.
