Gift Of Life Michigan launches “My Donor Story” social media campaign

Organ and tissue recovery program, Gift Of Life Michigan wants to hear from those who’ve received an organ, tissue, or eye donation. “My Donor Story” will highlight selected participants from the social media campaign. The campaign started on February 1 and continues through February 14, which is National Donor Day.

Individuals who want to participate in the “My Donor Story” must record a one-minute video detailing their process of becoming a donor-recipient and how the process impacted their life. Participants also must:

  • Record the video vertically
  • Look directly into the camera (not your screen)
  • Leave some space above and below your head
  • Record the video in a quiet area, and mute all devices
  • Keep it real, like you’re talking to a friend
  • Utilize the hashtags #MyDonorStory, #DonateLife, #LetsTalk and #GiftOfLifeMich

All participants will receive the chance to win a Gift of Life prize pack and be recognized in advertising videos through the organization’s “Let’s Talk” campaign.

“Sharing stories can be therapeutic for recipients and donor families alike,” said Dorrie Dils, CEO of Gift of Life Michigan. “It can also highlight the need here in Michigan and inspire people to step up to help others by signing up on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. Last year, thousands of engaged followers shared messages of gratitude through videos, comments, and likes on social media. We hope this initiative continues to grow and encourage others to join the organ registry, so we can close the gap between those who need organs and those who answer the call.”

In 2019, Gift of Life Michigan helped more than 1,000 people receive organ transplants in 2019.

“Without an organ donation, I would not be alive today,” said Katy Rozman, a two-time heart transplant recipient. “The gift of life has allowed me to grow into adulthood, graduate college, start a career, and get married. I try to advocate for organ donation as often as I can. I choose to celebrate my gift of life every day.”

Gift of Life Michigan was created in 1971 by a group of Michigan transplant surgeons. Together, they created a network for sharing kidneys. They also recover bone, skin, and other tissue for transplantation purposes. The non-profit organization is headquartered in Ann Arbor and is the state’s only federally designated organ and tissue recovery program.
