Council President Pro Tem Mary Sheffield Forges Partnership with Ice Cube, the Big 3 Basketball League, the Ricky Davis Legacy Foundation and Sylent Heart to Kick-off the 6th Annual Occupy the Corner – Detroit
Occupy the Corner – Detroit 2019 to kick-off aiming to pump resources and hope into communities struggling with crime, and gun violence by linking residents with job training, utility assistance, felony expungement, healthcare, and other vital services in an attempt to address the root causes of violence in Detroit.

City Council President Pro Tempore Mary Sheffield (D – District 5) will kick-off the 6th Annual “Occupy the Corner -Detroit” initiative on Friday, June 21, 2019, at 5 pm. Pro Tem Sheffield will be joined by World-renowned Actor/Director/Hip Hop Artist and owner of the Big 3 Basketball League Ice Cube, the Ricky Davis Foundation and Sylent Heart for this year’s kick-off. Also, joining Pro Tem Sheffield will be Hip-Hop Recording Artist Tee Grizzley and a host of community leaders. The mission, as always, is to engage the community, connect them to resources and empowers residents to be self-determinate with respect to improving the quality of life in some of Detroit’s toughest neighborhoods. This year’s Kick-off is sponsored by JP Morgan Chase & Co.
“Violence is destroying the very fabric of our neighborhoods and often leads to decaying communities. We, as Detroiters, must accept full responsibility for putting an end to this crisis. Therefore, I will continue occupying the corners in Detroit denouncing violence and offering resources and hope for Detroiters trapped in a vicious economic cycle which breeds a lot of the violence we see today. ” proclaimed Council Member Mary Sheffield.
Participants will be given information regarding voter registration, employment and job training, minor felony expungement, utility payment assistance, housing assistance, healthcare and much more. This event will also serve as a platform for citizens to voice their perspectives regarding the current cultural and social climate in the City. Also joining the Pro Tem at the Kick-off will be Hot 107.5, local artists, Cease Fire, Detroit Employment Solutions, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, United Community Housing Coalition, THAW, Mothers of Murdered Children, Team Wellness Center, Flip the Script, Wayne Metro, Detroit Job Corps, and others. With the partnership with Ice Cube and the Big 3, this year’s Kick-off will also serve as the prelude to start of the Big 3 Season which is opening in Detroit on June 22, 2019, at Little Caesar’s Arena.
There will be free food, refreshments, and fun for all as well as haircuts and braiding provided for the participants.
