Gerber Products, known for its infant nutrition services, announced Tuesday that the company will be investing $36 million in increased production of freeze-dried snacks.
The Fremont-based company has produced baby food for over 90 years and its freeze-dried snacks, affectionately known as ‘Melts’, are expected to create 50 new jobs by 2022.
“We are thrilled to see the number of Gerber Fremont employees grow with the advancement of our Snack portfolio with melts,” Andrew Willis, Factory Manager at Gerber, said in a statement. “We take great pride being the home of Gerber, and we are looking forward to many more years of growth and commitment within the Fremont community.”
The additional jobs are a large contrast to what Michiganders have seen in recent months. COVID-19 has had a drastic effect on Michigan’s economic development and the number of reliable jobs. In 2017, Gerber’s Fremont facility employed nearly 1,000 workers.
The company will be hiring full-time line workers with an estimated rate of $21 per hour. There is no word as to when the project will begin.
