Generation Next Comedy Explosion highlights budding talent

TREY CEOComic Skeeter Murray hosts October 30 event at the Detroit Opera House featuring three rising stars

Like other performers before him, local comedian Skeeter Murray is using his name and credentials to help bolster a cadre of up-and-coming comics. On October 30, the Detroit native will host the “Generation Next Comedy Explosion: Introducing Tomorrow’s Stars Today,” a comedy show at the Detroit Opera House featuring three budding comedians from across the country.

“I wanted to do something that keeps comedy shows alive in Detroit, but at the same time helps to introduce some great comedic talent,” said Murray, who has been performing for two decades and who will emcee the event. “Everyone should have a leg up when they start in this business. I should know because other comics did the same for me.”

The 8 p.m. show will feature:

Michael Blackson, aka, ‘The African King of Comedy’, has been entertaining audiences all across the country and around the globe for more than a decade, including an appearance in “Next Friday,” HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, Showtime at Harlem, Live in Hollywood, P. Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy on HBO, and in a commercial for the Chappelle Show on Comedy Central. Inspired by the stand-up comedy of Eddie Murphy, Blackson began to develop his comedic talent in 1992 in the unkind comedy clubs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Cocoa Brown, aka ‘One Funny Momma’, has worked in comedy for nearly 20 years and in 2014 starred in Tyler Perry’s “The Single Moms Club.” The Newport News, Virginia, native, born Farah Brown, left corporate America to purse stand up comedy (she was a comedy writer before she took to the stage) and won Washington Comedian of the Year. Her ability to convey her personal struggle through comedy is what led Perry to cast her in ‘Moms’ as well as on the OWN Network’s “For Better or For Worse.”

Tony Roberts, originally from Detroit, is a comedian, actor, writer and (sometimes) director. Roberts has been referred to as the ‘comedian’s-comedian.’ His appearances include HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam,” “Showtime at the Apollo,” “BET’S Comic view,” and “Russell Simmons Presents Comedy at the El Rey for Comedy Central.” A winner of BET’s Robin Harris award for Most Original Comic, Roberts has done three comedy specials.

Murray, who gained acclaim in the 1990s and made his own return to the stage two years ago, is having his own comedy explosion. He’s currently working on five television shows and a movie—including a sitcom that he created, produces, writes, and stars in – and recently completed a DVD entitled “American Bad Boy.”

Tickets are available at the Detroit Opera House box office and at all Ticketmaster outlets, including Macy’s. Charge by phone at (800) 745-3000
