Fun ways to keep your family fit

It’s finally fall! Everyone is back to school and the slow days of summer are now behind us. You may be feeling busier than ever between books and work and practices and carpools; however those are no reasons to put your family’s health and fitness on the back burner. Here are a few ways to keep your family fit and healthy this fall without feeling completely overwhelmed.

Organized Sports
Football, soccer, volleyball, and cheerleading are all sports that have fall seasons. If your kids have shown any interest in joining a team, why not sign them up now? Team sports allow them to get exercise after school and build their social skills. Not only will your kids have fun with their friends, they will be getting a good workout in without it feeling like work!

Just because all the delicious fruits and berries of the summer are going out of season doesn’t mean that you can’t find anything delicious in the fall. Pumpkin, apples and squash are three amazing fall foods that are healthy and versatile. Substitute spaghetti squash for pasta. Bake apples and sprinkle with cinnamon for a healthy dessert. I made this recipe last night and added ground turkey for some extra protein: Twice Baked Spaghetti Squash with Pesto and Parmesan. It was easy and so yummy!

Plan Ahead
I can’t stress enough the importance of planning ahead and staying organized when it comes to your family’s health and fitness. Carve out an hour on the weekend to plan your weekly meals and snacks as well as your grocery list. Not only will this keep you on track as far as healthy eating goes, but it will keep your budget in check as well. No more spontaneous stops at the drive through! Create a calendar and hang it where the whole family can see what’s in store for the week ahead.

Family Fitness
Yes, the weekends are typically for resting after your busy week, but you can still do fun family activities while sneaking in some extra fitness. How about a hike to check out the beautiful changing leaves? Fall is also a great time to go apple picking and don’t forget to pick out your pumpkins! How about challenging your family to a little backyard football game? Losers make dinner!

Keeping your family fit and happy this fall doesn’t have to be a chore. When in doubt, turn to the internet for ideas! Pinterest is a great resource for finding creative activities to do with your family. Follow Pure Matters while you’re on there! What kinds of things do you do to keep your family fit?
