Have you missed the regular income tax filing deadline? Do you have tax returns that you need to file from previous years? Do you need to apply for the Home Heating Credit before the Sept. 30 deadline? If you answer yes to any one of these questions, you can receive free preparation assistance from Accounting Aid Society at four locations in Detroit.
For those who do not owe taxes, which is often the case for the modest-income households served by Accounting Aid Society, there is no penalty for filing late. However, the Home Heating Credit, which helps families with the cost of heating their homes , expires at the end of September for the 2014 credit, and the deadline cannot be extended.
Eligibility for free tax help is based on income and includes families with total household incomes up to $53,000, and individuals with incomes up to $35,000. Eligibility for the Home Heating Credit (a state of Michigan credit) is based on several variables including household income, number of exemptions, and heating costs.
