Foundation Connects Children of Incarcerated Parents

A three-minute phone call could make all the difference for a child of an incarcerated parent.

And the Detroit-based non-profit organization, Pure Heart Foundation, is making it their mission to better reconnect those communication lines between children and their incarcerated parents through “The Call of Impact,” according to a press release.

#TheCallOfImpact, April 1 – June 1, is described as a call to action challenge aimed to bring attention to the “silent struggles” children with incarcerated parents experience daily. The Call of impact is also a call to action to target meeting the needs children have for consistent communication with their parents while assisting in their development.

The action is also geared toward helping children break the cycle of criminal justice generationally.

Currently, 2.7 million children have a parent presently incarcerated.

According to the Annie E. Casey foundation, preserving a child’s relationship with a parent during incarceration benefits both parties, the press release added.

The campaign will include prison reform activists, celebrities and allies, known as “Voices of Impact” who have personal experiences as children of incarcerated parents or parents who were incarcerated.

The Call to action where anyone can participate in:

  1. Call a loved one by phone, set a timer and only talk for 3 minutes. No matter where the conversation is at two minutes, you must announce one minute remaining and then hang up without notice at three minutes.

  1. Prepare a social media post  about your experience and use the hashtag #TheCallOfImpact

  1. Ask your social media followers to accept the challenge.

  1. Donate to help fund family reunification wraparound services.

The Call will be available on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, Linkedin and Clubhouse.

The official social media kickoff began April 1 and the campaign is aimed to meet the foundation’s $200,000 fundraising goal.

The funding will help improve and develop the relationship between the child and their incarcerated parent through providing the following services:

  • Fund 250 youth to communicate with their incarcerated parent 4 times a month
  • Video chat twice a month
  • Family Counseling: Parent and child reunifying counseling (Once parent is released)
  • Physical visits ( Pending Covid and Facility Lockdowns)
