Former Super Bowl Champion Returns to Detroit at Forbes Under 30 Event

DETROIT — The annual Forbes Under 30 Summit  was celebrated at the historic Detroit Opera House, October 10th – October 12th.

Focusing on the theme, “Decade of Disruption,” the event assembled a roster of leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators. One of the notable speakers was former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and Super Bowl champion., Ryan Nece. He spent a 7-year career in the NFL, including a stop here with the Detroit Lions. Currently, Nece is Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Next Play Capital.

After his professional athletic career, he learned investing and eventually his entrepreneurial spirit lead him to co-found Straightcast Media, a mobile app which empowered athletes to create their HD content, which was sold to FOX Sports in 2014. Nece’s current position in the business world allows him to sit at the intersection of sports, technology, and leveraging relationships into growing an investment platform.

Making that jump from professional sports into discovering what that next step of life is, isn’t always easy. “I think sometimes the biggest enemy in life is your inner me,” Nece said. “One of the things I encourage all athletes to start to figure out who that person is away from the game, away from the sport.”

While the former linebacker spent most of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2002, Nece also was a Detroit Lions player in 2008 and recounts his time in the Motor City.

“When I think about the character of this city, they show up, they rally around each other, …I’m a fan!” He also has a special sport for Detroit’s culture and place in music. “There’s such rich culture here, I don’t think gets really appreciated, …the music scene, the Motown scene, the rap scene. When I was here I appreciated it, I got a chance to go out and enjoy that and be with people that really embraced that.”

Ryan Nece is also the son of former NFL legend Ronnie Lott who played for 14 seasons in the 1980s and 1990s.
