Former Pistons legend Chauncey Billups agrees to join Clippers coaching staff

Chauncey Billups’ name finds its way into a lot of NBA conversation these days. Whether it’s an open GM or coaching position, the 2004 Finals MVP is usually on a list with other potential candidates. After today’s latest NBA move, take him off that list.

“Mr. Big Shot” is getting his “big shot.”

Thursday afternoon, the Los Angeles Clippers hired Ty Lue as its new head coach, and Billups will join him as the lead assistant coach. Veteran NBA coach Larry Drew has also agreed to join Lue’s staff.

Billups joining the Clipper coaching staff shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. After leading the Detroit Pistons to a championship in 2004, Billups played for several different organizations before returning to Detroit for his final season. One of those stops included a two-year stint with the Clippers.

As it stands, the Clippers have now assembled a strong coaching (on paper) pedigree with Lue, Billups, and Drew, as all have NBA championship on their resume as a head coach/assistant and player. In Lue’s case, it’s both.

Billups, 44, played 17 NBA seasons with several teams, but most notably with the Detroit Pistons.
