stokesFormer Ohio congressman Louis Stokes died yesterday at the age of 90.

“He died peacefully with Jay, his wife of 55 years, at his side. During his illness, he confronted it as he did life — with bravery and strength,” said the Stokes family in a statement. “He was always guided by faith, while embracing the prayers and well wishes of family, friends and constituents.”

The father of local newsman Chuck Stokes is noted for addressing assassinations and a number of scandals during his time as a lawyer and congressman. He is a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the very first Black to represent the state of Ohio.

“As a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the first African-American to represent the state of Ohio in Congress, Lou believed deeply in fairness and the idea that every American should have the same opportunity to succeed,” said President Barack Obama in a White House issued statement.“Lou leaves behind an incredible legacy in the countless generations of young leaders that he inspired, and he will be sorely missed.”

In 1967, Stokes started serving as a representative in Ohio after spending time as a distinguished lawyer. His brother, Carl in the same year started his term as Cleveland’s mayor. Stokes’ tenure in Congress included serving on the House Appropriations Committee and the House Intelligence Committee.

“He loved Cleveland and he was honored to have the opportunity to represent its citizens in the United States Congress,” the family added. “He was equally committed to our family, and his love knew no bounds. It is this enduring love that will sustain us in the days and years to come.”

The congressman was the Chairman of the House Select Committee on Assassinations that examined the deaths of President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He also chaired the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct (Ethics Committee).

Stokes’ legacy has impacted the lives of many African American law and government professionals today. He will be deeply missed and remembered for his acts of kindness, resiliency and forward thinking actions.
