Richard BernsteinThe Michigan’s Supreme Court in the last decade has become a dumping ground for political paybacks by several past governors.
Back biting and political bickering between republicans and democrats have stained the court.
The court has sometimes been an arena of political agendas. That why, we think that a shake up of the court should take place this November.
For the two-year term, the Michigan Chronicle endorses Judge Deborah Thomas. Judge Thomas has been a very out spoken advocate on the lack of African-Americans on Wayne County juries.
Judge Thomas has ruffled some feathers in her 20 years on the Wayne County Circuit Court bench, but her zeal and commitment to making sure that African American defendants have a jury of their peers, is one of the main reasons why we endorse her for the two-year term over Justice David Viviano.
Judge Thomas is not beholden to any political patronage and would bring a different voice to the court.
For one of the eight-year terms, the Michigan Chronicle endorses Justice Brian Zahra. Zahra who served 16 years as a judge in Wayne County, and on the Michigan Court of Appeals bench. Zahra has earned a well-deserved reputation as a no nonsense and fair judge.
Since being appointed to the seat in 2010, Zahra has been his own person. He has avoided the partisan wrangling that has tainted the court.
Former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, a democrat who worked with Zahra at the Dickinson Wright law firm, called him an “outstanding and fair minded judge, who is going to follow the law”. Justice Zahra deserves another term.
For the other eight-year seat, the Michigan Chronicle endorses Richard Bernstein. Legally blind since birth, Bernstein has worked passionately for equal rights for disable residents in Michigan and throughout the country.
We dismiss those critics who say Bernstein a former member of the Wayne State Board of governors is unqualified because of his lack of judicial experience. Some of America greatest judges, such as Earl Warren and Charles Evan Hughes, lack judicial experience before being appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Bernstein will do well as a judge on Michigan’s highest court. We whole heartily endorse Richard Bernstein.
