In a compassionate effort to combat food insecurity among seniors, Focus: HOPE, a trusted community anchor based in Detroit, is making significant strides in expanding its Food for Seniors program. This expansion includes the addition of 43 new food assistance locations in cities throughout Southeastern Michigan, thereby extending support to seniors living with food insecurity beyond Detroit. The move comes as part of their ongoing commitment to address the needs of older adults in the region, where approximately 43 percent of seniors are affected by food insecurity.
Recognizing the increasing financial challenges faced by seniors due to rising food and energy costs, Focus: HOPE has stepped up to provide essential resources. Through this commendable initiative, seniors in Detroit and 159 surrounding communities can now access monthly food assistance closer to their homes, eliminating the need to travel to Detroit to receive aid. Distribution centers have been strategically established in various local communities, including Belleville, Pontiac, Troy, and Gibraltar, making it convenient for seniors to access nutritious food options.
Portia Roberson, the CEO of Focus: HOPE, highlighted the organization’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for food assistance among seniors. The program is designed to supply seniors with month-long staples, such as milk, cereal, and canned goods, instead of offering one-time meals. This approach ensures that seniors can stock their pantries with shelf-stable essentials, providing them with sustenance and peace of mind throughout the month.
The roots of Focus: HOPE’s involvement with food assistance for seniors trace back to 1971 when it became part of the Commodity Supplemental Food Program. Since then, the organization has continuously worked to expand the senior program, transforming it from a pilot project into a long-lasting and impactful initiative.
In addition to its partnership with federal and state agencies and over 250 community partners, Focus: HOPE has also collaborated with Wayne County to set up pop-up distribution sites. These sites will be operational through September, providing further assistance to seniors in need. The pop-up sites are scheduled on specific dates at various locations, and seniors do not require pre-registration to avail themselves of the aid.
The scheduled pop-up distribution sites are as follows:
- July 29, 2023: Taylor Sportsplex, 13333 Telegraph Road, Taylor MI 48180

By providing monthly food assistance, they empower seniors to lead healthier lives and age with dignity. Through collaboration with local communities and government agencies, Focus: HOPE sets an inspiring example for other organizations to follow in their mission to care for and uplift seniors in need.
