After Monday night’s heavy rains, which brought as much as 3 inches in some parts of the metro area, flood warnings remain in effect until 10:45 a.m. Commuting is slow and difficult as metro -area freeways reopen to traffic.
In Detroit, flooding closed westbound I-94 at the Lodge, northbound I-75 at Grand River Avenue, and northbound M-10 (Lodge Freeway) between Jefferson and Congress.
Flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas are posing major problems for many residents as DWSD employees and Detroiters work to clear debris from drains.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation’s metro Detroit Twitter account, all Macomb and Oakland county freeways are open after earlier closures. In Wayne County, the Lodge Freeway is closed between I-75 and Jefferson Avenue and at the Jefferson/Cobo tunnel due to flooding.
Experts warn pedestrians to avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down and two feet of water can sweep your vehicle away.
“Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Arroyos, streams and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes — even from distant rainfall,” according to the weather service.
