Now the plot thickens. First Krystal Crittendon upset an array of state officials and Mayor Dave Bing, which eventually led to her ouster as the city’s top municipal attorney – now she wants to be mayor.
The city’s former top attorney announced Monday that she is exploring a bid for the office. Crittendon, questioned the validity of the city’s financial stability agreement, which essentially put her career and reputation in peril.
Crittendon, who is 49 and lives in northwest part of the city, made the announcement Monday morning on Mildred Gaddis’ “Inside Detroit” radio show on WCHB-AM (1200).
And what is her motivation for doing so? She touted how reinvigorated she has been by supporters who respect her defense of the city charter.
Last year Crittendon challenged the legality of the consent agreement. She was adamant that Detroit’s city charter prohibits the city from entering into contracts with entities that owe it money, which she felt was the state. It was $224 million in revenue sharing that Crittendon and some on the City Council said the state owed Detroit.
Crittendon did not say where she would get her financial support from.
“We’re going to get out there and introduce me to people so they can see I’m not the person the media made me out to be,” Crittendon said. “I’m very serious about it… People are feeling hopeful again. They believe that the city of Detroit can come back with the right leadership.”
Presently, announced candidates for mayor are Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon and state Reps. Lisa Howze and Fred Durhal Jr., both Detroit Democrats. Former Detroit Medical Center CEO Mike Duggan is said to be running as well. Bing has not said whether he will run for re-election.
