“Figure Skating in Detroit” (FSD) is a program that helps inner-city girls of color, ages 6 – 17, transform their lives by combining artistic discipline and education. The first city expansion of the acclaimed program, “Figure Skating in Harlem,” FSD aims to provide opportunities through its mission of teaching “confidence, leadership and academic achievement” to build champions in life.
In partnership with Winter Blast 2020, FSD hosted “Skating with the Stars” at Campus Martius on February 7th. Host by award-winning journalist, Tati Amare, “Skating with the Stars” featured a special ice skating demonstration by the young ladies of FSD and a motivational performance by “America’s Got Talent” 2nd place winner, The Detroit Youth Choir. The event also included “Star” appearances by Skating Olympian and FSD Co-Chair, Meryl Davis, Miss Michigan Chanel Johnson, Miss Teen Michigan Aneesa Sheikh and journalists from WDIV Local 4 news station.
“Figure Skating in Detroit is a beautiful combination of sports and what they can do in the lives of young women in particular, and academics,” said Meryl Davis when asked about FSD. “It’s really empowering people to develop the tools and develop the ability to do after whatever it is they want in life.”

An inspiring event to women of all ages, Miss Michigan, Chanel Johnson, had this to say about FSD, during the event. “These sorts of events are important because it gives our youth the opportunity to have a creative outlet and do things that they enjoy. I think this is the way our youth will be able to grow and be positive, productive members of our society in the future.”
