The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now made it illegal for any retailer to sell any tobacco products to persons under 21 years of age. This includes, (cigars, cigar wraps, e-cigarettes, and vaping pens). The FDA made an announcement on Twitter which states:
“It is now illegal for a retailer to sell any tobacco product – including cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes – to anyone under the age of 21 years. As required by the legislation, @US_FDA intends to publish a final rule updating its current regulations solely to carry out the amendments made by the legislation within 180 days. FDA will provide additional details on this issue as they become available.”
The legal age increase comes from the Trump administration which granted the change as part of the $1.4 trillion surplus package. The bill was enacted to avoid a looming government shutdown in Dec 2019. 19 states including California, New York, Texas, and Ohio formally passed Tobacco 21 laws that prevent the sale of the addictive substance to minors. 470 cities also participated in creating Tobacco 21 laws for minors. In Michigan, tobacco kills more people than AIDS, alcohol, auto accidents, drug overdoses, murders, and suicides combined. Also, the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products is the single, most preventable cause of disease, disability, and death, both in Michigan and across the United States. In Michigan, there’s been two deaths associated with vaping and 27 deaths across 25 states.
