“My husband and I decided we wanted to be the ones who actually raise our children. We didn’t want to get them out to different babysitters or anything like that. My position was the only one that I could work the midnight shift, and my husband worked days. Between the two of us, we actually took care of our children. We raised them the way we wanted them to be raised. They have always been our main priority.”
While Knight officially retires, she has agreed to work on a contingent basis, offering her expertise and guidance to new employees and supporting the new supervisor who has taken her place. This demonstrates her selflessness and dedication to her profession, even in her retirement.
Looking ahead, Knight is eager to enjoy her well-deserved free time. She plans to immerse herself in her yard, nurturing her plants and indulging in outdoor activities. “I like the other areas. Chemistry, hematology, microbiology, I like those areas too, but blood banking I will miss the most. I enjoyed problem solving and trying to find compatible blood for the cancer patients. Sometimes it takes maybe a day and sometimes it takes a couple of days and sometimes it takes a week, but we would figure it out. It was always rewarding helping the patients get back to their lives.”
As Knight embarks on this new chapter of her life, her family and colleagues celebrate her accomplishments. Although she prefers a low-key approach, her loved ones have planned a series of surprises and tributes to honor her incredible contributions.
