EXCLUSIVE: Detroit Police Rolls Out Mental Health, Crisis Intervention Training Citywide

– Andre Ash, Digital Anchor

DETROIT — Interim Detroit Police Chief James White announced his department has a strategic plan to roll out Crisis Intervention Training (CIT), across its police precincts citywide. Chief White announced the department’s plans exclusively to Michigan Chronicle.

Mental health professionals will work alongside officers on critical incidents such as domestic violence and barricaded gunman situations.

“It’s going to be a great benefit add to the community and to the police department,” said White. “This will allow mental health professionals to identify the crisis that the perpetrator is going through. It will Allows officer to most effectively communicate with that person in who’s in crisis. Having officers trained in CIT, the most valuable training I’ve ever participated in as a professional. …This will be one of the tools that will change law enforcement going forward.”

The effort to implement a robust mental health policing policy began under former police chief James Craig. Craig launched the training for two precincts before his retirement in early July.

Interim Detroit Police Chief James White joined Digital Anchor Andre Ash for a One-on-One Interview on violent crime, drag racing, neighborhood policing, and more!
