In a bold move to protect and educate the Detroit community, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) Detroit Chapter is poised to take a firm stand against human trafficking. The non-profit organization, with over fifty international chapters, embodies the heart and spirit of the city as they champion labor union workers across a myriad of job disciplines. Their mission, deeply rooted in serving their community, has resulted in various endeavors ranging from expungement workshops to facilitating CPR and CPL classes, providing transportation for citizens to polling places, and so much more. The CBTU’s broad-ranging commitment to their city doesn’t stop there; their philanthropic efforts extend to providing books, toys, clothing, and food to Detroit area children and seniors, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to community service.
On Saturday, July 29th, CBTU Detroit is set to host a monumental event called “Hidden in Plain Sight: Human Trafficking”. This Summit will be held from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Wayne County College Northwest campus at 8200 Outer Drive, Detroit, 48219. In partnership with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Center for Countering Human Trafficking (CCHT), the Mayor of Detroit’s office, and local law enforcement, the Summit is shaping up to be an essential milestone in the fight against human trafficking.
The Summit will feature expert presentations on combating this crime, specifically tailored for different audience groups – adults, parents, business owners, and youth.
CBTU is making the most out of this event by offering free tickets and encouraging groups from all walks of life to participate, from youth groups, churches, unions, sororities, fraternities, to block clubs, masons, and community organizations. Their objective is clear: empower the community with skills to recognize and counter human trafficking, thus protecting our youth and reducing their vulnerability.
In the words of Michael A. Joseph, President of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) Detroit Chapter, “One of the purposes of the CBTU is to uplift and assist our community in any way we can. This horrendous crime is in plain sight, and we must stand up to the challenge by galvanizing the power of the people to make positive change. Together we can do it!”
This ambitious endeavor by the CBTU Detroit Chapter is a testament to the power of community solidarity and action. Together, we can change the narrative and protect our city and its citizens from the scourge of human trafficking.
