Elijah Cummings, longtime Baltimore congressman, dies at age 68

Maryland Rep. Elijah Eugene Cummings has died at the age of 68. Cummings was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Maryland’s 7th congressional district. The son of a sharecropper, Cummings was a gifted speaker who passionately advocated on behalf of the poor and disenfranchised. He was Chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee that investigated the impeachment inquiry of Trump.
 
Cummings was unwavering in his mission to see democracy prevail.

“He worked until his last breath because he believed our democracy was the highest and best expression of our collective humanity and that our nation’s diversity was our promise, not out problem,” her statement reads.
 
Many respected public officials and political pundits took to Twitter to share their condolences.
 
“We lost a giant today,” tweeted Sen. Kamala Harris. “Congressman Elijah Cummings was a fearless leader, a protector of democracy, and a fighter for the people of Maryland.
