DTE Energy wins customer excellence award, cited as industry leader
DTE Insight app offers customer real-time mobile energy tracking, management and savings
DETROIT – DTE Energy has won a 2016 CLEAR Consumer Education Award from the non-profit Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative for the launch of the innovative DTE Insight app, recognizing DTE as an industry role model for its consumer-centric approach in the development of energy efficiency projects. The DTE Insight app allows customers to monitor real time energy use, and experience savings from their smart phone. DTE is the first utility nationwide to offer a real-time, mobile energy tracking and management tool to its customers.
“We are pleased to receive this award and proud of the positive feedback from our customers who are learning more about their personal energy usage, and making changes that save them money,” said Dave Meador, vice chairman & chief administrative officer, DTE. “The DTE Insight app helps them discover how to reduce energy use at home. It’s just one of the many ways our company helps to educate our customers about energy efficiency.”
The free DTE Insight app links a customer’s smartphone to an advanced meter, allowing customers to determine how and where they are using the most energy. By adding the DTE Energy Bridge, customers will see real-time energy usage information to help drive significant energy savings. Customers who actively use the DTE Insight app features and the energy bridge are reducing their energy usage from 5 to 10 percent, and those with Apple Watches can also view their real-time use through the Apple Watch app, according to Meador. DTE Insight app also offers:
- Personalized energy-saving tips and projects that encourage energy efficiency projects specific to each home
- Weekly challenges designed to engage and reward users for saving energy
- The PowerScan tool gives iPhone users the ability hold their phone up to the power cord of any electrical appliance to view its energy consumption and monthly operating cost
- Additional new features available this year, including an alert notifying customers when they are exceeding their targeted energy usage, and the ability to set a monthly energy dollar budget and monitor progress toward meeting that budget
DTE has expanded the scope of the DTE Insight app through Powerley, a 2015 joint-venture with Southeast Michigan-based Vectorform. Together, DTE and Vectorform are making this technology available to other utilities across the country.
“This award confirms the ability of Insight to provide home energy management tools to customers of other utilities,” Meador added.
DTE Energy customers with an iPhone or Android phone, and have their home equipped with an advanced meter, can go to the App Store or Google Play to download the app today. Go to the app’s menu and select tools to request an energy bridge.
