DTE is Rebuilding the Grid in the City of Detroit

DTE Energy is investing over $1 billion annually to modernize the grid throughout Michigan communities to improve both reliability and safety. As part of this investment, DTE rebuilds older portions of the grid.

When the company rebuilds parts of the grid, it may construct new substations and replace all the infrastructure that delivers power to homes and businesses with brand new, upgraded equipment. This includes the most modern poles, power lines and transformers.

This rebuild of the grid is happening right now in the city of Detroit in neighborhoods like Midtown, Brush Park, historic Corktown, portions of southwest Detroit and Islandview, on the east side. More projects are being planned.

The all-new infrastructure is designed to better withstand extreme weather, reducing the risk of outages. In addition, upgraded equipment adds capacity to support increasing energy demand and a move to electrification with things like electric vehicles.

When rebuilding work is completed for an area, reliability improves by 90% for customers in the first year.

DTE is rebuilding it’s infrastructure across its service territory, from Detroit and Ann Arbor to Pontiac and Richmond. Beyond rebuilding infrastructure where needed, the company is also taking other steps to increase reliability, including transitioning to smart grid technology over the next five years, updating and modernizing infrastructure and trimming the trees around equipment.
