Grant provides nearly 18,000 meals to needy seniors around Michigan
This holiday season, the DTE Energy Foundation is helping to give one of the greatest gifts of all – a hot meal to Michigan’s needy senior citizens. In total, the Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm, is donating nearly $110,000 in grants to 10 agency partners across Michigan, which provides nearly 18,000 meals throughout its service territories.
“The DTE Energy Foundation is proud to help bring thousands of meals to our seniors, who depend on the generosity of companies and employee volunteers such as ours to get a hot meal around Christmas,” said Faye Nelson, vice president of Public Affairs, DTE Energy, and president of the DTE Energy Foundation.
A majority of the funds benefit some of the company’s largest service areas in need. The Foundation is providing a $60,000 grant to Detroit and metro Detroit area agencies to fund the packing, delivery and serving of nearly 10,000 meals. An additional $42,000 provided 7,000 meals for the company’s Holiday Meals on Wheels efforts in Grand Rapids, Muskegon and Grand Traverse areas. DTE Energy also is donating more than 13,000 blankets to the seniors across the state.
“We do our best to make the season bright as nearly 700 of our employees, their families and friends help to spread holiday cheer in our communities. This is a signature program that supports our aspiration to be a force for growth and prosperity in the communities where we live and serve,” Nelson said.
Leading up to and on Christmas morning, DTE Energy employees, their friends and families, will help package the meals, load up their vehicles and don their Santa hats to deliver 5,500 meals and blankets throughout Detroit. In total, upwards of 600 employee volunteers will serve the Detroit and metro Detroit area seniors. Employees will be packing at Valley Services, and the DTE Energy Caniff and Warren Service Centers.
An additional 4,000 meals will be packed and distributed throughout metro Detroit, including Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, and Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.
On Thursday, Dec. 16 and 17, the company participated in packing and delivery events in Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Oceana and Ottawa counties, as well as Traverse City, Manistee and Cadillac. The remaining funds supported Holiday Meals on Wheels programs in Gaylord, Buckley and Bad Axe.
