The City of Detroit announced that due to driver shortages, fewer than 10% of DDOT (Detroit Department of Transportation) buses are operating as of March 17, 2020. These shortages are due to the spread of COVID-19 in the State of Michigan. The city is asking residents to seek out other forms of transportation while DDOT handles the pending situation.
Many Detroiters depend on DDOT to travel around the city. In January 2020, the City of Detroit reported that the DDOT had over 1 million monthly riders in Detroit. While DDOT has suspended its services, SMART bus is still in operation in select areas. The SMART bus transit centers in Detroit and Royal Oak are closed temporarily.
As of March 17, 2020, there are 54 cases of COVID-19 in the State of Michigan.
