Following the death of Adreian Payne, Draymond Green is honoring his former Michigan State teammate by making a sizeable donation in his name, People reports.
Payne, a former Michigan State basketball star, was fatally shot in Florida on Monday (May 10). Green, who played college ball with Payne from 2010 to 2012, announced he would be donating $100k as a tribute to his late friend after the Grizzlies-Warriors playoff game.
Green told reporters after the 101-98 Warriors win, “My emotions are kind of all over the place. I don’t like to cry in front of people.”
The NBA star continued, “I’m going to go home and just sit on my podcast and talk because I can pause that and cry if I need to cry.”
As Green pledged to donate $100k in Payne’s name, he also called on his Michigan State Spartan family to follow suit in honoring the late 31-year-old.
Green said during postgame press, “If that’s naming something on the campus after him if that is some scholarships for some kids for Dayton, whatever that is, I call on my Spartan family to band together and do something in Adreian’s name.”
According to Mercury News, during the game, Green sported “RIP AP” and “Long Live 5” on his shoes. Payne donned the number 5 when the two were Michigan State basketball players.
On Monday, the Orange County Sheriff’s office identified Lawrence Dority in the fatal shooting of Payne, who formerly played for the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Orlando Magic. Dority was arrested for first-degree murder and is currently being held at Orange County Jail, People reports.
