Dr. Patrice S. Johnson Joins Project Scientist as President and CEO

Project Scientist, the esteemed national education nonprofit committed to introducing under-resourced girls to the wonders and opportunities of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM), proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Patrice S. Johnson, Ed.D, as its new President and CEO. Dr. Johnson, previously the Chief Program Officer at Black Girls CODE, steps into this role, succeeding the organization’s founder, Sandy Marshall.

Project Scientist has been at the forefront of providing equitable and evidence-based STEAM programs in both English and Spanish for underserved girls and non-binary youth aged 4 to 18. As it celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, the organization takes pride in having positively impacted over 20,000 girls across 26 U.S. states and Mexico through its after-school and summer programs.

In a statement, Board Chair Julie St. John hailed Dr. Johnson as a visionary leader for social equity, expressing confidence in her ability to empower a new generation to address the world’s greatest challenges. Under Dr. Johnson’s guidance, Project Scientist aims to create a future where girls have equal access to pursue STEM careers and leadership opportunities, building upon the strong foundation laid by Sandy Marshall.

Dr. Patrice S. Johnson brings a wealth of experience and dedication to her new position. As the inaugural Chief Programs Officer at Black Girls CODE, she played a pivotal role in advancing the movement to prioritize the inclusion and empowerment of Black girls in technology. Additionally, her work as Vice President for the Center for Policy and Research at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation involved collaboration with members of the U.S. Congress to address key issues affecting marginalized communities.

Throughout her career, Dr. Johnson has demonstrated her commitment to providing equitable opportunities for youth. In her role as Executive Director of Boys Hope Girls Hope of Detroit, she spearheaded fundraising campaigns, forged transformative partnerships, and introduced programmatic innovations to enhance opportunities for young individuals. Furthermore, she holds the distinction of being the youngest elected Pro Tempore Mayor and Councilwoman for the City of Muskegon Heights, Michigan.

Speaking about her new position, Dr. Johnson expressed her enthusiasm for igniting STEAM confidence in thousands of girls nationwide and abroad while advocating for gender and racial equity. She views Project Scientist as the catalyst for future innovators and disruptive creators, firmly believing that the organization’s students will redefine the landscape of STEAM and ultimately change the world.

Dr. Johnson’s academic achievements are equally impressive. She stands as the first person of color to complete a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership and Development from Cornerstone University. Her academic journey also includes a B.A. in Social Relations and Public Policy from Michigan State University and a Master of Arts in Ministry Leadership from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary.

Project Scientist’s mission is further reinforced by its strategic partnerships with schools, libraries, and nonprofits throughout the country, facilitating the establishment of after-school STEAM Clubs at various locations. Additionally, the organization leads summer programs for girls and non-binary youth, conducted in schools and STEM companies.

For girls and non-binary youth aged 13 to 18, Project Scientist Scholars offers valuable mentoring opportunities, nurturing their STEAM career skills in a safe and inclusive environment. Moreover, the Project Scientist Teaching Institute extends support to K-12 educators by providing them with free gender and racial equity teaching strategies and math education skills.

Project Scientist’s exceptional programming has also enabled them to form innovative partnerships with leading STEM companies, fostering deep engagement with employee volunteers and women already established in STEM careers.

Despite women filling nearly half of all jobs in the U.S., a mere 27% representation in science, technology, engineering, and math careers highlights the pressing need for initiatives like Project Scientist to continue their vital work in closing the gender gap within STEM fields, as indicated by the U.S. Department of Labor.

With Dr. Patrice S. Johnson at the helm, Project Scientist looks set to accelerate its positive impact and inspire countless young minds to embrace the wonders of STEAM while promoting a more inclusive and diverse landscape within the field. The organization’s commitment to empowering underprivileged youth ensures a brighter and more promising future for generations to come.
