Dr. Krysan, Colleagues Used Elaborate Experimental Design to Discover How Individuals Develop Preferences for Where to Live
Nationally renowned sociologist Dr. Maria Krysan will present a lecture on her award-winning studies of urban areas and neighborhood preference at 5 p.m. Tuesday, December 3rd at the Frank Hayden Multipurpose Room at the Wayne County Community College District Downtown Campus, located at 1001 West Fort Street in Detroit.
The lecture is presented by Wayne County Community College District’s Institute for Social Progress. The event is open to the public at no cost.
Titled “Unpacking Neighborhood Preferences,” the lecture will detail Krysan and her colleagues’ research, which took a hard look at persistent residential segregation, and the causes and influences of neighborhood preference. Using an elaborate experimental design, Dr. Krysan and the research team looked to find out how individuals evaluate the neighborhoods in which they prefer to live and whether race mattered in that evaluation. The results revealed biases that showed themselves in sometimes surprising ways.
Dr. Krysan, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs, is a nationally renowned sociologist and one of the nation’s leading scholars on residential segregation in the U.S. For more information on the event, call 313-496-2600.
