With three to five inches of new snow expected to fall overnight, the Detroit Department of Public Works will be out salting major roads to keep them safe for travel.
A total of 50 trucks – the city’s full fleet – will be deployed around 8 p.m. and continue salting (and plowing if necessary) throughout the night until the city’s 673 miles of major roads streets are cleared. Because of the frigid temperatures today, some crews have been out pre-treating some areas, including bridge overpasses, which freeze more quickly.
Although some snow accumulation is expected, DPW is not anticipating the need for plowing the city’s 1,800 miles of residential streets. However, the City has put its private contractors on notice in the event plowing of residential streets becomes necessary.
