DPS students and staff to take a district-wide “crunch” Friday in support of healthy eating

At noon on Friday, October 24, 2014, which is National Food Day, students, staff, teachers and administrators across Detroit Public Schools will collectively crunch on a Michigan apple to commemorate the First Annual Motor City Apple Crunch Day. The initiative is part of the district’s ongoing efforts to promote healthy eating. Detroit Public Schools Emergency Manager Jack Martin will join students and staff from Burton International Academy on Friday for a school-wide “crunch.”
In collaboration with the School Food FOCUS Upper Midwest Regional Learning Lab, Food Day also will be marked across DPS with a lunch menu highlighting three items commonly produced in the Midwest:  chicken drumsticks, potatoes and apples.  The DPS Office of School Nutrition will cook “clean label” drumsticks with minimal spices added.  The drumsticks will come from chickens raised without the use of antibiotics.  Potatoes will be sourced from Elmaple Farms located in Kalkaska, Michigan and packaged by A. L. Johnson located in Leroy, Michigan. The Michigan Apples (Jonathan variety) will come from Klenk Orchards located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Detroit Public Schools (DPS) knows that healthy eating helps to create healthy minds and bodies.  The Office of School Nutrition supports the educational development of our students by providing healthy breakfast and hot nutritional lunch to all students in grades K-12 at no charge.  On-site preparation ensures that meals are served hot in compliance with federal, state and local health department regulations.  All menus adhere to the guidelines of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Office of School Nutrition serves more than 85,000 healthy meals daily.
