New homeowners are expected at 600 W. Lafayette, former home of WWJ and current home of Michigan AFSCME Council 25, as new condos and Class A office space, are to be built as part of a $35 million project by a local development team.
Downtown’s first stand-alone luxury condominium project in 20 years is set to launch bringing new, permanent residents on the west side of the district. Local NBC television affiliate WDIV Channel 4 will be getting new next door neighbors, as a $35 million, 11 story development is slated to begin construction next year on the adjacent parking lot. The building located at 600 W. Lafayette is most famously recognized as the former home of local CBS affiliate WWJ TV-62 and Michigan AFSCME Council 25. The Ashton Detroit will have the latest in luxury living with high end finishes, a pool, a fitness center, retail space and enclosed parking. The existing building will be upgraded to Class A office space.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to bring more living space to downtown Detroit,” said Eric Means, lead developer for the project. “This historic project will build upon the legacy of the former home of WWJ and Michigan AFSCME Council 25 by retaining the historic architecture. Our goal is to create exciting living spaces adjacent to the existing structure that will offer spectacular views of downtown, the Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit River.”
The partnership developing Ashton Detroit is called 600 Ventures Development Group. The group is led by Eric Means of The Means Group. The other two partners are The Resendes Design Group, led by Francis Resendes and the Holdwick Development Group, led by Brian Holdwick.
Eric Means has more than 18 years of experience in all facets of the industry. His company and its affiliates have successfully produced several multi-million dollar projects over the years. He is currently leading the effort to restore the famous Metropolitan Building in downtown Detroit.
Francis Resendes’ 27 year career includes working on numerous projects ranging from K-12 schools, higher education facilities, healthcare institutions, public libraries, museums, auditoriums and philanthropic endeavors. His work exploring the connection between art, design and architecture has been published and exhibited nationally.
Brian Holdwick specializes in real estate development. Previously he spent 22 years as Executive Vice President of Real Estate & Financial Services of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation. His vast experience with downtown Detroit developments is known throughout the area.
The Ashton Detroit will house 78 condominiums and five penthouses. The units will have floor-to-ceiling glazing to capture Detroit’s unique urban landscape. The first three levels of the new 11 story building will house 200 parking spots for both the commercial and residential tenants of Ashton Detroit.
