Downtown Detroit Comes Alive: The Rink at Campus Martius Park Opens for the 2023-2024 Season

The air in Downtown Detroit is buzzing with excitement as The Rink at Campus Martius Park, presented by Visit Detroit, kicks off its 2023-2024 season this Saturday, November 18. This year’s Opening Weekend Celebration, slated for November 18 and 19, promises an unforgettable experience with skating parties, special guest appearances, and much more.

Located in the pulsing heart of Downtown, The Rink at Campus Martius Park is not just a skating rink; it’s a vibrant symbol of community and festive spirit. As Michigan’s premier family-friendly outdoor skating venue, it stands proudly on Woodward Avenue, offering a skating experience that’s as beautiful as it is iconic. It’s no wonder that this rink is a top destination in the region, especially during the holiday season.

Laura Dean Senior Manager of parks and public spaces shared with Michigan Chronicle, “This is the 20th year of the beloved ice rink and we have a full weekend of skate parties to usher in the rink opening and the festive holiday season in downtown Detroit so, we’re really excited for kids, families, and everyone to come out and enjoy the rink here at Campus Martius.”

This year, the winter magic at Campus Martius is more enchanting than ever. The transformation into a winter wonderland is complete with the return of the ice skating rink and the centerpiece of the festivities – the massive Christmas tree. “You don’t have to be an expert, just head down here check out the tree, grab some cocoa, lace up your skates and hit the ice because it’s truly a vibe all season,” said Dean. The atmosphere is electric, with Visit Detroit and the Downtown Detroit Partnership staff having the honor of being the first to glide on the freshly smoothed ice on Thursday.

Saturday’s kick-off will start from noon until 4pm, “We’ll have Santa out here on ice, we’ll have DJ Invincible, and we’ll have some giveaways,” said Dean. “The event in the park is free to attend you’ll just have to pay for rink admission and if you’re a night owl, later that evening we’ll have an ugly sweater holiday party and then we’ll close out the weekend with a Frozen skate party with some Frozen characters on ice for photo opportunities.” Dean encourages everyone to dress up like their favorite princess or prince.

Expectations are high as hundreds of thousands of visitors are anticipated to flock to Downtown Detroit for a weekend of holiday fun. And the rink has extended hours to accommodate everyone’s holiday schedules: Open Sundays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. to midnight, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to midnight.

For those planning their visit, detailed information on The Rink, including pricing and hours, is available on the Downtown Detroit Partnership’s website at downtowndetroit.org. Don’t miss out on the chance to be part of this magical experience – it’s truly beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Downtown Detroit!
