In a season that has seen its ups and downs, the Michigan Wolverines achieved eligibility to play in a post-season bowl game with their sixth win over the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday. Northwestern has not had the best year themselves, coming into the game with a 4-6 record, but Michigan knew they would have to play a game limiting their turnovers and putting pressure on the opposing quarterback to get a victory and qualify for a bowl game. On Senior Day and in front of over 109,000 fans in attendance, including Bryce Underwood, the No. 1 ranked high school recruit who recently committed to the Wolverines during the preceding week, Michigan left no stones unturned on their way to a 50-6 triumph.
The Wolverines defense overwhelmed the Wildcats from start to finish, limiting them to just 127 total yards of offense including only 10 rushing yards in the game. Michigan’s defense was impressive, getting to the Northwestern Quarterback for six sacks and the team had eight tackles for loss as well. The Wolverines also picked off the Wildcats twice in the game with two interceptions and even forced a safety late in the fourth quarter.
Michigan’s offense had a stellar performance to complement what the defense did. Quarterback Davis Warren started under center and threw for 195 yards completing 26 of his 35 pass attempts. Kalel Mullins and Donovan Edwards ran the ball well for 92 and 67 yards respectively and combined for four touchdowns on the day. Even reserve back Tavierre Dunlap was able to get in on the action scoring a touchdown on a 20 yard run as he took a handoff from Freshman Jadyn Davis who got in the game for one play (his first time seeing the playing field this year and in his young Michigan career). Michigan’s 396 yards of total offense was their second highest of the season behind 435 yards against Arkansas State.
The Wolverines (6-5) now head to Columbus Ohio for “The Game” as they will try to take down the No. 2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (10-1) in the regular season finale and rivalry game. Northwestern (4-7) will host the Illinois Fighting Illini (8-3) in their instate rivalry game next week in Evanston.
Final Score: Michigan 50 – Northwestern 6
