DMC Midtown Marketplace expands breadth of healthy food choices in Detroit and Midtown

Papa-Joes-Detroit-RenderingThe Detroit Medical Center Midtown Marketplace a Papa Joe’s Gourmet Eatery opened this past week with three new restaurants and plans to bring five more eateries on line in the coming weeks. This bustling marketplace offers a diverse breadth of healthy food options for more than 10,000 health care workers, DMC patients, families and visitors and those who live and work in and around Midtown.
New eateries in the DMC Midtown Marketplace include regional favorites such as Starbuck’s, Sukhothai, Estia Greek Street Food and a new Chiqui’s burrito bar. Opening over the next few weeks are Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, Kabob Grill, Papa Joe’s Gourmet Market and Burger Bar Detroit. Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina will be open in early summer.
DMC knows the important relationship of nutrition to overall wellness, and to the challenges of maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen while at work.
“This 15,000 square foot food plaza offers diners a diverse range of cuisines from around the globe, as well as access to wholesome foods that would align with any nutrition plan,” says Tony Curtis, Papa Joe’s Gourmet Market & Catering.
The DMC continues to work with its partners to develop heart healthy programs, services and food options and is committed to providing individuals with information to make informed decisions about their overall health and food options so they are empowered to make healthy choices. Ongoing efforts with DMC nutritionists and external community health initiatives complement the marketplace project begun in July of 2015
“As Midtown’s economic development anchor, DMC remains focused on partnerships that enhance the overall health and wellbeing of our patients, visitors, colleagues and communities we touch,” says Conrad L. Mallet, chief administration officer, Detroit Medical Center.
The new food plaza is accessible through the Brush Mall entrance, the Harper Hospital lobby and from DMC main campus facilities.
“Midtown continues to grow and thrive because of anchor institutions like the DMC and the partnerships they bring,” says Sue Mosey, executive director of Midtown Detroit, Inc. “It’s this type of collaboration that continues to spur development not only in Midtown but throughout Detroit.”
Eating healthy can have a significant impact on energy levels and productivity and a healthy diet can also positively impact an individual’s ability to manage stress. In addition to its popular 61 Day Health Challenge and its Take the Stairs initiatives there are more ways than ever before for workers and Detroiters to manage their overall health.
“We are excited about this new food venture as it represents an opportunity for many regional businesses to collaborate on a project that provides access to new and healthy food options,” says Adam Baru, co-owner, Chiqui.
