Hospitals: DMC Children’s Ranks Among Nation’s Best

DETROIT, MI, FEBRUARY 4, 2013 — Neonatal and emergency care at Children’s Hospital of Michigan gains national ranking as part of Parents magazine 10 Best Children’s Hospitals 2013 survey. In addition to ranking hospitals based on their overall quality, Parents judged hospitals based on six pediatric specialty areas: cancer care, preemie care, heart care, orthopedic care, pulmonary care, and emergency care. DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan ranked among the top 10 in two categories: emergency care (6th) and preemie care (7th), and is the only hospital in the state to have ranked in these categories.

“When babies are at their most critical and vulnerable state, there is no better place you want them to be than at Children’s Hospital of Michigan where the medical experts and technology rank at the utmost highest national levels,” said Herman Gray, MD, president, DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan. “This recognition by Parents is a testament to the quality of care available to families when they need it most.”

DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s Emergency Department (ED) is one of a handful of Level One pediatric trauma centers in the United States certified by the American College of Surgeons. The department treats more than 90,000 patients annually, making it one of the five busiest pediatric emergency services in the country.

The 32-bed, level 3c neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Children’s Hospital of Michigan provides the highest level of neonatal care for the sickest and highest risk infants. Our dedicated intensive care transport team provides immediate response, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to transport critically ill infants to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan from hospitals all across the state. Air transports are initiated to transport patients from further distances.

All surveyed hospitals are members of the Children’s Hospital Association. Hospitals are ranked by Parents editors with input from a team of medical advisors based on their responses to detailed questions in the following areas: survival rates for childhood cancer, pediatric heart disease, and other critical conditions; their experience in performing certain complex procedures; the depth of the research program; safeguards to prevent medical errors; staffing ratios and quality; community outreach; and services that address the emotional needs of families of outpatients and inpatients.

Results of the extensive survey will appear in the March 2013 issue of Parents on newsstands nationwide on February 12, 2013 as well as online at https://www.parents.com/health/doctors/best-childrens-hospitals/.
